More than four centuries ago, Sri Vaikuntanathar and Sri Vaikuntavalli Thayar were worshipped in a neighbouring village. When invaders threatened the shrine, devotees carried the deities away overnight and hid them in a well at Chengad — a secret passed quietly from one generation to the next until the day they were finally brought back into the light.
Centuries later, as families moved away for work and the temple fell silent once more, it was the descendants of Chengad's own Brahmin families — alongside devotees who still remembered the village of their childhood — who came back to restore it, deity by deity, wall by wall.
